How to add an AI chatbot to a Shopify store

What installing a chatbot on Shopify actually involves, the theme app embed that trips most people up, how billing works through your Shopify invoice, and why the storefront is only the first channel.

In short: installing an AI chatbot on Shopify takes three steps, install the app, switch on its theme app embed so the widget appears, and configure the bot. The step people miss is the second one: the app installs successfully but nothing appears on the storefront until the embed is enabled in the theme editor. With ProxyAI, charges go on your existing Shopify invoice, there is no separate account or card, and the bot is not limited to the storefront, the same bot can answer on WhatsApp, Telegram, LINE, Messenger, Instagram and Discord.

The three steps

1. Install the app

From the Shopify App Store, as with any app. With ProxyAI this creates your account automatically using your store's details, no separate signup, no card. You get a chatbot with a welcome credit, already permitted to run on both your myshopify.com address and your own domain.

Worth knowing for later: if you uninstall and reinstall, you return to the same account, with your bot, purchases and credits intact.

2. Switch on the theme app embed

This is the step that catches people out. The chat button is a Shopify *theme app embed*, which means nothing appears on your storefront until you turn it on in the theme editor, even though the app installed perfectly.

Open the theme editor, find App embeds, enable the chat embed, and save. If you have installed a Shopify chat app and cannot see it on your store, this is almost certainly why.

The reason it works this way is Shopify's, not the app's: theme embeds let a merchant control what injects code into their storefront, which is the right default even though it costs one step.

3. Configure the bot

Set the bot's identity and instructions, and add capabilities as you need them. On ProxyAI these are separate add-ons rather than plan tiers, document grounding, abuse limits, human handoff, helpdesk connection, cart actions, each a one-time charge that comes with credits. Selecting several bills them as a single Shopify charge.

How billing works

Everything goes through Shopify's own billing screen, on your existing invoice. No separate subscription, no second card, nothing renewing on its own.

Three mechanics worth understanding before you buy:

Add-ons and top-ups are one-time charges. Approved on Shopify's billing screen, and nothing renews by itself.

Credits are what the bot spends as it answers. Every reply, store lookup and document search draws down a balance. A typical reply costs a fraction of a cent, and the rates are published per model.

A bot with no credit stops replying. This is the failure mode to protect against, switch on usage alerts so you hear about a low balance before your customers do. Store pricing also differs from the public price list, so check the rates shown inside the app rather than the public one.

The price you paid for an add-on is fixed at purchase; a later price change never applies retroactively.

The storefront is not the only channel

Nothing about installing through Shopify confines the bot to your storefront. The same bot connects to WhatsApp, Telegram, LINE, Messenger, Instagram and Discord from the same Channels screen.

This matters more for commerce than for most categories, because e-commerce customers frequently start on the storefront and continue on WhatsApp or Instagram. If the bot is storefront-only, that continuation is a fresh conversation with no history, which is the thing customers find most irritating about support.

The Web channel arrives already configured for your storefront domain, so leave its allowed-domain list alone unless you are embedding the bot somewhere else too.

What to do before you switch it on

Give it your policies, not your marketing. Returns, shipping times, sizing, warranty. A bot grounded in the pages customers actually ask about outperforms one given a brand deck.

Decide what it must not do. Whether it may discuss order-specific details, offer discounts, or make claims about stock. Easier to decide now than to discover from a transcript.

Set up escalation before launch, not after. The first week produces the questions the bot cannot answer. If there is no path to a person, those are lost customers rather than useful data.

Test with real customer questions. Pull ten from your actual support inbox, not ten you invented, which will be unrepresentatively well-formed.

FAQ

How do I add an AI chatbot to my Shopify store?

Install the app from the Shopify App Store, enable its theme app embed in the theme editor so the widget appears on your storefront, then configure the bot's identity and add-ons. The theme embed step is required, the app can install successfully while nothing shows on the storefront until it is switched on.

Why is my Shopify chat widget not showing on my store?

Almost always because the app's theme app embed has not been enabled. Shopify requires merchants to switch embeds on in the theme editor under App embeds, so an app can be fully installed and still render nothing on the storefront until that is saved.

Do I need a separate account to use ProxyAI on Shopify?

No. Installing the app creates the account from your store's details, with no separate signup and no card to enter. Charges appear on your existing Shopify invoice, and uninstalling then reinstalling returns you to the same account with your bot, purchases and credits intact.

How is a Shopify chatbot billed?

Through Shopify's own billing screen on your existing invoice. With ProxyAI, add-ons and top-ups are one-time charges that do not renew by themselves, and conversation usage draws down a credit balance at published per-model rates. Store pricing differs from the public price list.

What happens if my chatbot credits run out?

The bot stops replying until the balance is topped up. Enabling usage alerts is the safeguard, since an unnoticed empty balance is effectively a support outage on your storefront.

Can a Shopify chatbot also answer on WhatsApp and Instagram?

Yes. Installing through Shopify does not limit the bot to the storefront, the same bot connects to WhatsApp, Telegram, LINE, Messenger, Instagram and Discord from the same Channels screen, which matters because commerce customers often start on the storefront and continue in a messaging app.
