MCP + Cart Actions
What This Add-On Does
Without it, your bot answers from its identity, its instructions and any documents you uploaded. With it, the bot reads your live Shopify store the moment a shopper asks, and can act on the cart:
- Finds products by description, price or category.
- Answers on a specific product, variant and price.
- Says whether something is in stock or out of stock.
- Answers shipping and returns questions from your own store policies.
- Builds a cart during the conversation and hands over a checkout link.
Shopify stores only. It reads the store your bot was created from, using Shopify's own connection for assistants, so a bot that did not come from a Shopify store has nothing to read.
What It Cannot Do
It never gives stock numbers. Shopify only tells assistants whether an item is in stock or out of stock, never how many are left, so "how many do you have?" is a question your bot cannot answer. That is Shopify's rule, and no setting on either side changes it.
It also only sees what your shoppers see: unpublished products and anything hidden from your online store stay invisible to it.
Buy It
It is unlocked by the plan you pick in the Shopify app's Choose add-ons step, and there is nothing to buy separately. Free unlocks it with a small Powered by ProxyAI line under the chat box on your storefront. The $69 Deal, a one-time charge on your Shopify invoice with no subscription, unlocks it with no badge and $69 of AI credits. The features are identical on both. To move from Free to the Deal, choose the greyed-out entry in the sidebar or reset onboarding from Settings.
The new settings appear in your dashboard the moment the purchase goes through.
Control What the Bot May Do
Open Configurations → Store actions. Changes save as you flip them, there is no Save button.
Cart actions
Browser assistant, on your storefront, the bot changes the cart the shopper is actually looking at. Their cart drawer updates as it happens, so what the bot says and what they see always match.
Chat app assistant, on WhatsApp, LINE and other chat channels there is no storefront open, so the bot puts the order together and sends a link to the ready-made cart.
With both switched off the bot still answers every product, price, stock and policy question. It just stops building orders.
Limits
Most of one item per request is the biggest quantity of a single product the bot will add at once, up to 100. The bot knows the limit, so it says no politely instead of failing. With both cart switches off there is nothing to limit.
Hand over a checkout link decides whether the bot may point a shopper at checkout at all. Turn it off and the bot builds the cart but leaves the shopper to check out in their own time. This one stays meaningful even with cart actions off, the shopper still has their own cart on your site.
What It Costs to Run
Two separate lines on your bill, both visible in Usage & costs:
- AI usage, the ordinary per-message cost every bot has. An answer based on your live products costs slightly more than a plain one, because the bot read more to write it.
- Store lookups, every time the bot checks your store it is counted, and charged per hundred checks. It is listed separately from AI usage so you can see *why* a busy day cost more, and you are only charged for checks that actually happened.
The Model rates tab shows your current rates and estimates a month of traffic for you. Always check there rather than trusting a figure from an older page.
Test It
Open the chat on your own storefront and try, in this order:
- "What do you sell for under $50?"
- "Tell me about <a product you stock>", check the options and prices are right.
- "Is it in stock?", expect in stock or out of stock, never a number.
- "What's your returns policy?", the answer should come from your own policy pages.
- "Add two to my cart", then open your cart and check they are really there.
- If you run WhatsApp or Telegram, ask about the same product there and check you get a link back.
Common outcomes:
- The bot answers vaguely instead of from your catalogue, the add-on is not on this bot, or you are chatting somewhere other than your store's own widget.
- The bot finds a product but calls it unavailable, stock is tracked per option, so it should tell you which sizes or colours are available and only call the whole product out of stock when every option is.
- The cart does not change, check Browser assistant is on, and that you are testing on your storefront rather than in a chat app.
- The bot refuses a large quantity, that is the per-request limit doing its job. Raise it in Store actions → Limits.
